Overview
Our Faculty. The faculty in the Decision Sciences area study decision problems involving uncertainty, competition, complex systems, risk aversion, and multiple objectives. Problems with these elements arise in a variety of contexts and our interests are naturally interdisciplinary.
Our research focuses primarily on formal models of decision making and methods to apply formal models to practical decision problems. This modeling and methodology focus complements Fuqua's strengths in psychological and behavioral (i.e., descriptive) decision making research. Our strength in modeling also supports faculty in other academic areas.
Our teaching focuses on providing students with the knowledge and skills to develop and analyze models of business problems.
Our Impact. The Decision Sciences area and Duke more broadly is widely recognized as a leader in decision analysis. A recent study of decision analysis programs in the United States recognized Duke (along with Harvard and Stanford) as having a "five star" graduate program in prescriptive decision analysis; Duke was also recognized as having a "four star" graduate program in behavioral decision analysis.1 In a recent analysis of citations to research publications, Duke's "management science" faculty (including both Decision Sciences and Operations faculty) was ranked 1st among U.S. business schools in terms of the total number of citations and 3rd in terms of the average number of citations per faculty member.
