Programs

Duke CIBER hosts and sponsors numerous programs each year in order to promote education and research in international business. Below is a synopsis of our ongoing and annual programs. Click on the program for more information, or consult the archive section to view past Duke CIBER programs.

Offshoring Research Network

The Offshoring Research Network (ORN) project on offshoring of technical and administrative work was launched in 2004 at Duke University CIBER. Since its launch, ORN has become one of the world's most respected authorities on research and analysis of offshoring trends.

InterCultural Edge (ICE)

InterCultural Edge (ICE) is a collaborative initiative between the Fuqua School of Business, Duke CIBER, Richard Lewis Communications, Cultureactive.com and 7 CIBER schools. ICE is a web-based product that teaches cross-cultural awareness in business settings by focusing on individual assessments. This allows the student or executive to compare personal results with team results, and to compare these with other national cultural profiles with a focus on maximizing the effectiveness of diversity.

National Forum on Trade Policy (NFTP)

These forums are the result of collaboration among several regional CIBERs and the North Carolina Department of Commerce. The purpose of these forums is to bring together high level officials, including two U.S. trade representatives appointed by the governor of each state, state trade directors, industry senior executives, faculty, and scholars to explore and find proactive solutions to increasing economic integration. The 2009 National Forum on Trade Policy Issues Related to Trade, Transportation, & Regional Collaboration will be held on November 5-6 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Faculty Development in International Business (FDIB)

Duke CIBER hosts workshops and conferences designed to encourage professional development within the various disciplines, including offshoring, cross-cultural awareness, and short-term study abroad. They are co-sponsored by a number of CIBERs and attract faculty, professionals, and administrators from all over the country.

K-12 Outreach Initiatives

There are two K-12 CIBER initiatives. We lead the CIBER K-12 Consortium, with the support of other CIBER schools, to contribute to curricular reform in second language instruction by bridging the second-language and global-awareness gap. The goal is to integrate business, culture, and language education at the K-12 level; share resources and practices; and identify and collaborate on future initiatives undertaken individually or collectively. Our other initiative, Global Business Preparatory Program (GBPP), is an innovative summer program for North Carolina high school students introducing them to the new global economic realities by providing them with unpaid internships in Puebla, Mexico. Globalizing Business Schools (GBS) Program Historically Black Colleges Universities (HBCU)

Duke CIBER has recently joined the Globalizing Business School (GBS) program for HBCU (Historically Black College and University) institutions. This effort is led by the University of Memphis in partnership with the Institute for International Public Policy (IIPP), CIBERs, and HBCUs.This intensive GBS program involves 14 CIBERs and 14 HBCU partners working together to develop international plans that are uniquely specific to the needs of the partnering HBCUs. While there are over 100 HBCU institutions across the country, the GBS program primarily focuses on HBCUs located on the east coast.

Global Business Project (GBP)

The Global Business Project (GBP) is a graduate-level course designed and developed by a consortium of Centers for International Business Education and Research (CIBERs). The primary goal of these centers, funded through matching grants issued by the US Department of Education's international studies division is to improve American competitiveness through comprehensive service and programs in educational and corporate settings. The CIBER representatives who came together to create the GBP wanted to provide a way for their MBAs and graduate students in related disciplines to increase their global business and language competency through guided hands-on business experience in global markets. The resulting course capitalizes upon the individual strengths and international ties of the participating CIBER institutions, with each CIBER responsible for leading teams to a country or region that matches its school's particular expertise.
