Short Term Study Abroad Workshop

May 20-22, 2007 @ R. David Thomas Center , Durham , NC

From October 2006, Duke CIBER along with a consortium of nine CIBERs at Brigham Young University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Michigan State University, Purdue University, The Ohio State University, University of Memphis, University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, University of Pittsburgh, and University of Texas at Austin will host an annual workshop designed to support other business schools interested in establishing academically substantive programs and providing a forum where participants from established programs can explore emerging issues and share best practices.

This initiative creates a comprehensive program and resources for enriching the IB business curriculum and serves students, faculty, and business school administrators nationwide. The workshop will create a forum for exchanging information helpful to administrators and faculty interested in establishing or updating for credit STSA courses. To ensure broad impact, the workshop will be offered to deans, administrators, program directors, and professors at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Faculty who go on to lead STSA classes will gain insights into IB issues that are best suited for exploration in an STSA format. Moreover, preparing to teach and lead an STSA will serve as a vehicle through which business schools can infuse faculty with IB awareness as well as increasing the number of graduates with first hand experience with global business cultures. Scholarships will be available to faculty and administrators from small and under funded institutions.

The 2007 STSA Workshop agenda entails panels on overview of models, course content and logistics, intercultural competency and assessment, best practices by geographical regions, and concurrent sessions for undergraduate, graduate, budget and administration. The workshop concludes with a broad overview of ideas and models that may shape the direction of short term study abroad programs and practices.
