The Offshoring Research Network
|
Duke CIBER at the Fuqua School of Business has been conducting research on the subject of offshoring Business Processes, Information Technology, and other knowledge-based functions for the past four years. In 2004 and 2005, the Offshoring Research Network (ORN) research was sponsored by Archstone Consulting and in 2006 by Booz & Company. The 2007 buy-side company survey is being sponsored by The Conference Board. This annual survey not only collects data on companies currently offshoring, but those considering it along with those who have decided not to offshore. The goal of the research is to track firm level data on key performance metrics and the current perceptions of financial, operational and political risks associated with the five leading offshore operational models. Results and findings from the survey have been presented at a number of conferences, workshops and meetings. Recently, presentations have been given at The Conference Board 2008 Strategic Outsourcing Conference in Chicago, The SDA Bocconi Conference on Offshoring & Outsourcing, CROs in Las Vegas, the Enterprise Software Roundtable in Chicago, The Doctoral Consortium at Duke, the IAOP Cincinnati Chapter Inaugural Meeting. |

Consulting Projects in China, Japan, and Brazil
A consortium of seven CIBER schools at Duke, George Washington, Maryland, Pittsburgh, Temple, Kansas and UNC-CH (lead school) came together to develop and implement the new MBA course called the Global Business Project (GBP). Consortium members take turns leading groups of students to a number of developed and developing countries. In the spring of 2008, UNC-CH led projects and groups of students to China, Kansas to Brazil, and Temple to Japan. Duke is planning to lead projects to Russia in 2009-10 in collaboration with Duke Center for Slavic, Eurasian and Eastern European Studies.
The GBP course was designed to provide graduate students at participating institutions the opportunity to increase their ability to conduct business in languages other than English with emphasis on less commonly taught languages and to provide students with the experience working in virtual and co-located teams on projects for multinationals or local companies. This year, five MBA students from Duke Fuqua School of Business were selected competitively to participate in the new Global Business Project. Participating students included Pablo Kohan, Jeffrey LeDuc, Karthik Meda, Crystal Wu, and John Yuen. Duke MBA students were assigned consulting projects located in China and Brazil.
