Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)


1. How much does the LI cost and when is the money due?
The entire cost is $3,370. This includes a non-refundable $500 deposit that must accompany your application form by May 15.  The balance of the tuition ($2,870) is payable to Duke University’s Bursar’s Office, 919-684-3531.  You will be notified by email of the tuition balance due date.

2. What does that tuition include?
Tuition includes all instruction and materials.

3. What are acceptable methods of payments for the $500 deposit?
Checks or postal money orders, payable to Duke University

Cash payments, traveler’s checks or credit cards of any kind are not accepted.

You can also send deposits via wire transfer, payable to "Duke University."

You may wire your tuition deposit directly to our bank account.  We must be able to immediately identify the wire to properly credit your account.  Therefore, we ask that your wire instructions clearly state the following information:

Note:  The bank that Duke University uses – Wachovia – may deduct a wire transfer fee from your transaction amount – this amount will be added back to your remaining tuition balance

4. Who do I contact with visa questions?
Contact the Admissions Office at the Fuqua School: (919) 660-7705.

5. How do I get from the airport to Fuqua?
You must arrange for taxi or shuttle service once your flight has arrived.

6. Do I have to be accepted at Fuqua to attend the LI?
Yes.  This program is only for students who will be attending the Fuqua School of Business in the Fall semester.

7. Will classes be held all day?
Yes, beginning on the first morning of the program, July 13. Plan to be at the Fuqua School attending classes, lunch, and tutoring sessions from approximately 7:45 a.m. until at least 5:00 p.m., for the entire program.

8. Will I have time to find an apartment during the program?
No. You should plan to rent an apartment prior to your arrival here, unless you arrive several weeks before the program begins. But please, do not count on having free mornings or afternoons to search for an apartment, buy a car, etc. after July 13.

9. Where can I get a driver's license?
You can obtain a North Carolina driver's license in Durham at 3825 S. Roxboro Street, Suite 119. The phone number is (919) 560-3378.

10. Where can I find housing?
Contact Residence Life & Housing Services – Housing Assignments - at Duke Central campus at (919) 684-4304 or http://rlhs.studentaffairs.duke.edu or housing@studentaffairs.duke.edu. You may also find useful the Apartment Locator in Durham at www.apartmentguide.com.

11. Can I attend the LI and the Summer Math Review Course?
If you are required to complete the LI, do not plan to enroll in the Summer Math Review program. The two programs meet at the same time. If you have questions about your readiness for the academic year regarding math skills, please contact Paula Sloan, Director, Summer Math Review, at ps3@duke.edu or at (919) 660-7737.

12. Where do I go on the first day of the program, July 13?
You should arrive at the Fuqua School by 8:00 a.m. and come directly to the Keller East Wing.  Please park in the Frank Bassett Parking Lot located at the end of Science Drive.  You will be allowed to park at this location on the first day without displaying a parking permit. During registration, you will receive a parking permit to place inside your car windshield starting on day 2 of the program.   The parking permit will only be valid for the duration of the Language Institute.

13. What will the daily schedule look like?
From July 13 through July 24, the daily schedule of the LI consists of classes and tutorial sessions from 8:00 AM until 12 noon and then again from 1 PM until 5 PM in the afternoon. During the three weeks of the Global Institute, the Language Institute will be in session at times that fit into the student’s overall schedule. 

We will test your skills and discuss your goals with you, and then we will put together a course of study that fits your needs and goals. All participants will do oral presentations, library research, team debates, and case studies.

14. What kind of clothes should I bring?
Durham in the summer is very hot and humid, so dress accordingly. However, the classrooms are often rather chilly, so carry a sweater or sweatshirt with you each day.

15. Will I have library privileges?
Yes, you will have temporary library privileges at the Fuqua School Library for duration of the program.

16. Will I have an email account?
Yes, we will assist you in setting up an email account.

17. Will I have access to computers if I don't have one?
Yes, we have computer labs, which you will be able to use while you are enrolled in the Institute program.

18. Where will I get an I.D. card?
We will arrange on the first day of the program to have an identification card procured for you. This card will allow you use of some facilities on campus and allow you access to the building after hours and on weekends.
