Marketing Practicum

BA 490.301 and BA 490.401

Fall 2009 Professor Joel Huber

The Marketing Practicum allows you leverage your knowledge in a marketing consulting project for an ongoing organization. It is very intensive, beginning in November 4, 2009 and culminating in a presentation to upper level management in late February of 2010. The Practicum is about as much work as, and provides credit for, two courses. You will need to register for both terms 2 and 3.

The Practicum will support five teams of five students each, with priority given to Fuqua MBA students. The first groups that send an acceptable team to joel.huber@duke.edu will be assigned to the project. Because teams including Fuqua students have priority, teams not including a Fuqua student will not be approved before September 15. It is expected all teams will be assigned by October 15.

If you have a partial team, send that information to Professor Huber (joel.huber@duke.edu), he will link you to other partial teams.

It is important that each team have skills needed for the project, and, although Fuqua students have priority, we encourage teams including individuals from different parts of Duke (e.g., engineering, environment, public policy). Each team should contain individuals with the following skills:

•  Consulting experience . Each team needs at least one person with a minimum of two years consulting experience working with clients.

•  Substantive knowledge . Each team needs expertise in the substantive issues of the business. Thus for example, the National Institute for the Humanities practicum would benefit from some team members having experience in higher education while for the eBay practicum experience in advertising and electronic commerce is needed. For the American Express Project knowledge of credit card marketing would be useful.

•  Technical knowledge . Each team needs members with the ability to understand the technical issues in the project.

Below are capsule descriptions of the projects: More detail can be found by clicking on the titles

eBay seeks to to strengthen its position in sales of Clothes, Shoes and Accessories on its website by focusing on two well-defined segments: Fashion Fanatics and Brand Bargain Enthusiasts.
