Competition in Remanufacturing

Many consumer products like single-use cameras and toner cartridges are remanufactured and sold by large manufacturers.

Remanufacturing is the process of disassembling used items, inspecting and repairing/reworking the components and using these in new product manufacture. A product is considered remanufactured if its primary components come from a used product (after ensuring that they are functional). Consumer awareness, environmental activism, and legislative pressure are forcing firms to manufacture environmentally friendly products. Many firms now take back their products in order to recycle the material into new products. However, there may be greater economic benefit in remanufacturing these items instead of recycling them.

In this stream of research we look at the incentives for large manufacturers when faced with competition in remanufacturing a product.

Large Network Supply Chains

Many supply chains today are not simple two-tier arrangements, but in fact, large networks with multiple suppliers of different components, as well as multiple processors, distributors and retailers. We analyze large network-type supply chains (i.e. supply trees) and consider the role of contract leadership in the chain. Supply chain efficiency (or channel efficiency) depends to a large degree on the number of layers in the chain as well as the location of the leader in it.

This research is motivated by Japanese keiretsu- conglomerates or suppliers, manufacturers and distributors. Competition in such situations is not between individual firms but between conglomerates.
