Notes on ScreenCam Movies

What are ScreenCam movies?
Some of the topics on this Excel Review web site are supported by ScreenCam movies. These movies are short, screen-view demonstrations in Excel accompanied by voice narration that you can play on your computer.

What do I need to play a ScreenCam movie?
Because voice narration is part of these ScreenCam movies, to properly play them you'll need audio capability on your computer. In addition, depending on the ScreenCam format movie you choose, you may also need to have a copy of the free ScreenCam player installed on your computer.

How do I handle a ScreenCam movie file?
The ScreenCam movies on this web site are available in two formats: "NeedsPlayer" and "StandAlone".

  • NeedsPlayer: ScreenCam files in this format are smaller in size than in the "StandAlone" format. They have an .scm extension. This format requires that you have the free ScreenCam Player software installed on your computer. If you plan to view more than one or two ScreenCam movies, it's worth your while to download the free player. The Player file is named SCPLAYER.EXE and is about 897K in size. It requires no installation other than being loaded on your hard drive.
  • StandAlone: ScreenCam files in this format have the necessary player software embedded, so their file sizes are larger. As you might expect, their file extension is .exe. If you only plan to view one or two ScreenCam movies, this is probably the most convenient format for you.

Tips

  • Depending on the way you have your computer configured, clicking a link to a ScreenCam movie file will either start up the ScreenCam movie or prompt you to download the file. If you want to change your configuration, edit your browser's settings (preferences) for applications.
  • If you download a stand-alone-format (.exe) ScreenCam movie file and save it to your hard drive, you can play the file by double-clicking the file name in Windows Explorer.
  • If you download a "needs-player"-format (.scm) ScreenCam movie file and save it to your hard drive, you can also play the file by double-clicking the file name in Windows Explorer. (You must have the free ScreenCam player installed on your computer.)
  • If when you click a ScreenCam movie file web page link you see a screen full of gibberish instead of the download dialog you expect, try holding down the SHIFT key before clicking the file link.
